First published in 1940, this novel follows an unnamed whiskey priest through the Mexican state of Tabasco during a campaign to wipe out the Church. He moves from village to village saying clandestine Masses, drinking, and trying to avoid a young lieutenant who believes the new order requires his capture. A mestizo attaches himself as a possible informer; a dentist, a pious woman, and the priest's abandoned child appear along the way. The setting is heat, banana country, and police checkpoints. The book is a pursuit narrative about a bad priest who remains the last functioning one, not a general history of the Cristero years.
