This selection gathers the poems Keats wrote in the few years before 1821. Early work includes sonnets and the long romance Endymion. The 1820 volume supplies the narrative poems Lamia, Isabella, and The Eve of St Agnes, the fragmentary Hyperion, and the odes to a nightingale, a Grecian urn, melancholy, autumn, and indolence. Recurring concerns are sensation, myth, the pause before death, and the making of art from passing things. The book is a body of odes, romances, and fragments, not a novel and not a life of the poet.
