Synopsis
This collection gathers the poems Marvell wrote in the mid-seventeenth century: country-house and garden lyrics, political poems of the Civil War and Protectorate, satires, and the later verse of a Restoration member of Parliament. Typical pieces address a coy mistress, a mower in the fields, Appleton House, Cromwell, and a voyage to the Bermudas. Wit, classical allusion, and topical argument sit side by side. There is no narrative through-line. The book is a body of lyric and occasional verse, not a biography and not a history of the Commonwealth.
