This anthology draws short poems from the Greek Anthology, the large gathering of epigrams compiled from Hellenistic times through the Byzantine Palatine and Planudean collections. Typical pieces are love poems, epitaphs, dedications left at temples, invitations, riddles, and sharp jokes about doctors, misers, and bad poets. Speakers address boys and women, mark a sailor's grave, or offer a lock of hair to a god. The poems are usually only a few couplets long and come from many hands across several centuries. The volume is a selection of brief inscriptions and songs, not a single epic and not a history of Greece.
