Planet of the Apes

By Pierre Boulle · 2020

Synopsis

First published in 1963, this novel follows the journalist Ulysse Merou, who travels with a scientific party to the distant star Betelgeuse and lands on a planet where intelligent apes - chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans - form a civilization that hunts and studies speechless humans. Captured, Ulysse must prove his reason to the scientist Zira and her colleagues while the ape city debates what he is. The book is a satirical voyage of first contact and reversed hierarchy, told as a found narrative. It is a novel of ideas about species and civilization, not a retelling of later film adaptations.
