The narrator, who answers to Piranesi, inhabits a vast House of endless halls filled with statues, an ocean that floods the lower floors, and a sky in the upper ones. He keeps journals, tends to the bones of the few dead he has found, and believes himself one of only two living people, the other being a man he calls the Other, who seeks a hidden knowledge. Fragments of memory and of another world begin to unsettle his account of the House. The book is a novel of isolation and investigation inside an impossible architecture, not a historical study of the etcher Piranesi.
