First published in 1945, this children's novel introduces Pippi Longstocking, a nine-year-old who lives alone in Villa Villekulla with her horse and monkey, her sailor father being away at sea. She is preternaturally strong, tells tall tales, and ignores the rules that the neighboring children Tommy and Annika, and the local adults, take for granted. Episodes follow school, shopping, a circus, tea with society ladies, and games that invert adult authority. The setting is a small Swedish town and the house at its edge. It is a comic novel of a child who cannot be made ordinary.
