First published in 1869, this Palliser novel follows Phineas Finn, a young Irish barrister who enters the House of Commons and learns the cost of party loyalty, office, and marriage among the English political class. He is drawn to Lady Laura Standish, the heiress Violet Effingham, and the widow Madame Max Goesler, while his career depends on patrons and on votes that may injure his Irish constituents. Parliament, hunting houses, and London society form the setting. The book is a political novel of ambition and conscience, the second of Trollope's Palliser sequence.
