First published in 1939, this novel follows Penelope Taberner Cameron, a contemporary child sent to recover at Thackers, an old Derbyshire farmhouse belonging to her relations. In certain rooms and moments she slips into the late sixteenth century, when the same house is occupied by the Catholic Babington family. She moves between the working farm of her own day and the household caught up in plots surrounding Mary, Queen of Scots. The book is a time-slip story about divided loyalty, the texture of farm and manor life, and a house that holds two centuries at once.
