First published in 1911, this is J. M. Barrie's novel version of the Peter Pan story. Mrs Darling glimpses Peter at the nursery window; he teaches Wendy, John, and Michael to fly and takes them to the Neverland, an island of Lost Boys, pirates under Captain Hook, and other childhood figures. The narrator comments on mothers, forgetting, and the children's make-believe as Wendy becomes housekeeper to Peter's band. The book expands the play's scenes with more of the Darlings' household and the island's daily life. It is a children's novel of flight and return, not the stage script.
