First staged in 1904, this play follows the Darling children - Wendy, John, and Michael - who fly from their London nursery to Never Land with Peter Pan, a boy who will not grow up, and the fairy Tinker Bell. There they meet the Lost Boys, Indians, mermaids, and the pirate Captain Hook. Wendy is pressed into a mother's role; the children play at war and housekeeping; the nursery window and Mr and Mrs Darling remain the other pole of the action. It is a stage fantasy about childhood, memory, and the pull of home, written for performance rather than as a novel.
