In rural Maine, the doctor Louis Creed moves with his wife Rachel and their children to a house beside a busy road. Behind the property lie a children's pet burial ground and, beyond it, a hidden burial place that the neighbor Jud Crandall says can return the dead - changed. After a family loss, Louis is tempted to use that ground against his own warning knowledge. The novel follows grief, marital strain, and the refusal to accept death as final. It is a horror novel about resurrection and its cost, set in a New England small town rather than in a haunted house of the older type.
