This late Shakespearean romance, first printed in 1609, follows Pericles, Prince of Tyre, as he flees the incestuous court of Antioch and is driven from city to city by storm and political danger. He wins Thaisa of Pentapolis in a tournament, loses her at sea after the birth of their daughter Marina, and believes both wife and child dead. Marina grows up in Tarsus, is sold into a Mytilene brothel, and preserves herself by wit and skill. The play is a tale of separation and recognition across the eastern Mediterranean, told with a Gower chorus. It is a romance of lost family, not a Roman history.
