First published in 1838, this travel narrative records Flora Tristan's voyage of 1833-1834 from France to Peru, where she hoped to claim a share of her father's family estate from her uncle Don Pio de Tristan. She describes the Atlantic crossing, Valparaiso, the desert road to Arequipa, convents, civil-war politics among rival presidents, and later Lima's customs and a sugar estate. Throughout she writes as a woman legally constrained by marriage and as an observer of slavery, the Church, and republican disorder. It is a first-person travel book and social report on early republican Peru, not a novel.
