Synopsis

In the sprawling city of New Crobuzon, a mix of humans and xenian species, the scientist Isaac Dan der Grimnebulin takes a commission from Yagharek, a garuda whose wings have been removed, to restore the power of flight. Isaac's research releases a dangerous slake-moth, whose feeding on minds forces an uneasy alliance among Isaac, the khepri artist Lin, criminals, the militia, and other city powers. The setting is a grimy industrial metropolis of railways, slums, and thaumaturgy. The book is a single novel of urban fantasy and political horror, the first of a loosely linked Bas-Lag sequence.
