Back to CatalogueThis volume presents the four late-fourteenth-century alliterative poems uniquely preserved in British Library MS Cotton Nero A.x. Pearl is a dream-vision debate with a lost child appearing as a maiden. Cleanness is a homiletic poem on purity that retells biblical narratives. Patience retells the story of Jonah. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an Arthurian romance in which a beheading game tests a knight of the Round Table. The poems share a North-West Midland dialect and likely a single anonymous author. The book is a gathered text of those four works, with modern apparatus, not a later retelling.
