First published in 1929, this novel follows the childhood of Apu and his sister Durga in a poor Brahmin household in a Bengali village. Their mother Sarbajaya struggles to keep the family fed while the father, Harihar, a priest and would-be writer, is often away seeking work. The children's days are spent in the fields, at festivals, and in small thefts and games; an elderly relative, Indir, lives at the edge of the household. Money, hunger, and the pull of the wider world press on a family that cannot remain as it is. It is a village novel of growing up, not a film treatment.
