The third canticle of the Divine Comedy, written in the early fourteenth century, follows the pilgrim Dante as Beatrice leads him through the celestial spheres from the Earthly Paradise. They pass the heavens of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Fixed Stars, and the Primum Mobile, meeting souls ranked by the virtue they practiced. The poem treats vows, justice, empire, and the order of the cosmos in encounters and doctrinal speeches. In the Empyrean the pilgrim approaches a vision of God. It is a theological narrative in terza rima, completing Inferno and Purgatorio.
