Paradise Lost

A Poem in Twelve Books

By John Milton · 2003

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First published in 1667, this English epic in blank verse recounts the biblical Fall. After their expulsion from Heaven, Satan and the rebel angels hold council in Hell and resolve to corrupt God's new creation. Satan crosses Chaos to Eden, where Adam and Eve live under a single prohibition concerning the Tree of Knowledge. The poem follows the temptation and the eating of the fruit, and it also presents the war in Heaven and the making of the world as told to Adam. It is a theological narrative poem about disobedience, freedom, and exile from the garden.
