This tetralogy, issued between 1924 and 1928, follows Christopher Tietjens of Groby, a Tory Yorkshire gentleman and government statistician, through the years before and during the First World War. His marriage to the brilliant and destructive Sylvia, his attachment to the suffragist Valentine Wannop, and his service on the Western Front form the main strands. The novels move from English country houses and London offices to the trenches and the shattered routines of home. The subject is how a code of duty and restraint meets modern sexual politics and industrial war. It is four linked novels, not a single-volume plot.
