Synopsis

First published in 1894, this short novel is narrated by Lieutenant Thomas Glahn, a hunter and former soldier living in a hut in the Nordland forests of northern Norway. He meets Edvarda, daughter of the local trader Mack, and they begin a courtship of pride, sudden coldness, and public slights. Glahn's isolation, his dog Aesop, and his walks in the woods frame an account of desire that turns punitive. A later document shows him after he has left the district. The book is a psychological novel of erotic conflict in a northern trading settlement, not a wilderness adventure.
