Painter of Passion
The Journal of Eugène Delacroix, a Selection
By Eugène Delacroix · 1995
Back to CatalogueThis selection from the journal of Eugene Delacroix, kept mainly in the 1820s and again from 1847 until his death in 1863, records the daily work of a painter in Paris: sittings, commissions, colour, the studio, and visits to galleries. He writes about Rubens, Mozart, literature, and the politics of the Salon, and he drafts notes toward a dictionary of the fine arts. The book is a working diary, not a formal autobiography. First published in the 1890s, it shows how a nineteenth-century artist thought on the page about pictures, music, and the discipline of looking.
