On a holiday in Cornwall, Simon, Jane, and Barney Drew stay at the Grey House with their great-uncle Merriman and find an old manuscript map in the attic. The map points toward a grail hidden along the coast, a thing wanted by people who serve a hostile power the children come to know as the Dark. With Merriman's guarded help they read local legend against the shoreline and the standing stones. The novel, first published in 1965, is a children's quest story in which a family holiday becomes a hunt, and Cornwall's sea and churches are the field of an older war.
