This Chinese novel, assembled in the fourteenth century and attributed to Shi Nai'an, tells how more than a hundred men and women, wronged by corrupt officials, gather as outlaws at Liangshan Marsh under leaders such as Chao Gai and Song Jiang. Episodes follow individual fighters - the spearman Lin Chong, the monk Lu Zhishen, Wu Song the tiger-slayer - as they are driven from ordinary posts into the band. The Song-dynasty setting mixes tavern brawls, court intrigue, and large set-piece battles. The book is a martial saga of brotherhood and rebellion, later also known in English as Water Margin.
