First published in 1937, this memoir recounts Karen Blixen's years running a coffee farm in the Ngong hills of British East Africa, later Kenya. She writes about the Kikuyu and Somali people who work on the land, about Kamante, Farah, and the hunting companion Denys Finch Hatton, and about drought, fire, and the failing plantation. Lions, ox-wagons, and Nairobi society sit beside accounts of illness and departure. The book is a first-person farm chronicle and a portrait of a colonial landscape, not a novel and not a systematic history of the colony.
