Our Life in the Highlands

Leaves from the Journal of Queen Victoria

By Queen Victoria · 1973

Synopsis

First published for a general readership in 1868, this book selects entries from Queen Victoria's journal of journeys in Scotland, chiefly at Balmoral between 1848 and 1861, with earlier visits and a few tours in England, Ireland, and on yachts. She records rides, expeditions, ghillies, cottages, weather, and family life with Prince Albert, while political business is largely left out. The form is a royal diary offered as a private view of Highland days. It is a memoir of place and household routine rather than a political history of the reign or a travel guide to the glens.
