This novel follows Oscar Hopkins, an awkward young Anglican from a Devon Plymouth Brethren household who becomes a priest and a compulsive gambler, and Lucinda Leplastrier, an Australian heiress who buys a Sydney glassworks and gambles to keep herself independent. They meet on a sea voyage to New South Wales and stake a reckless bet: that a glass church can be transported upriver to a remote settlement. Mid-nineteenth-century England and colonial Australia are the settings. The book is a historical novel about faith, chance, and two people whose need to wager becomes a way of living.
