First published in 1928, this novel follows Orlando, a young noble at the court of Elizabeth I, through centuries of English history without ordinary aging. He writes poetry, serves as ambassador in Constantinople, and wakes as a woman; she then returns to England and navigates property law, marriage, and literary fashion from the Restoration through the Victorian age into the present of the 1920s. Lovers, patrons, and a long poem called The Oak Tree mark the years. The book treats sex, time, and English letters as a single comic biography, not a historical chronicle of any one reign.
