By Gabriel Garcia Marquez · 2006

Synopsis

First published in 1967, this novel recounts the Buendia family over seven generations in the town of Macondo, founded in a swamp and later reached by the banana company, civil war, and the outside world. Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula Iguaran begin the line; later bearers of the repeating names Aureliano and Jose Arcadio live through inventions, insurrections, loves, and a manuscript of family history. Gypsies, rain, and political massacre enter the same register as household events. The book is a multi-generational saga in which private obsession and public history occupy one isolated town.
