First published in 1957, this novel follows Sal Paradise, a young writer, as he crosses the United States by bus, car, and hitchhiking in the years after the Second World War. His companion is Dean Moriarty, a restless talker whose marriages, thefts, and hunger for movement pull Sal from New York to Denver, San Francisco, Mexico, and back. Jazz clubs, borrowed cars, and brief jobs mark the trips. The book is a first-person account of friendship and motion rather than a single plotted intrigue: it records what the road does to loyalty, work, and the wish for a permanent home.
