Synopsis

First published in 1963, this novel sends James Bond after Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who is running a biological scheme from a mountain clinic in Switzerland under cover of heraldry and a supposed cure for allergies. Bond works with the College of Arms in London, with Alpine tracing, and with Tracy di Vicenzo, a reckless young woman whose father heads a Corsican crime syndicate. The action moves from the French coast and London to Piz Gloria and a winter pursuit. The book is a spy thriller in which a private attachment and a public manhunt run together, without turning the mission into a travelogue.
