First published in 1937, this novella follows two migrant farm workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, as they take jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley of California. George is small and wary; Lennie is large, strong, and intellectually limited, and he keeps accidentally hurting the soft things he likes to touch. They share a plan to buy a small farm of their own. On the ranch they meet the boss's son Curley, Curley's wife, the stable hand Crooks, and Candy, an aging worker with a dog. The book is a short tragedy of companionship and the American itinerant labour system, not a picaresque of the open road.
