First published in 1915, this novel follows Philip Carey, an orphan with a club foot, from a vicarage childhood in Blackstable through school, a season in Heidelberg, failed art study in Paris, and medical training in London. His life is bent by an obsessive attachment to Mildred Rogers, a waitress who uses and discards him, and by later ties to Norah and to the Athelny household. Money, humiliation, and the wish to be free of need structure the episodes. The book is a long coming-of-age novel about emotional dependence, not a medical textbook and not a Paris artists' romance alone.
