Back to CatalogueThis collection brings together Austen's six completed novels with her shorter fiction. The novels, first issued between 1811 and 1818, follow gentry households in southern England as young women weigh marriage, money, and self-knowledge: the Dashwood sisters after a loss of fortune, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, Fanny Price at Mansfield Park, Emma Woodhouse's mismanaged matchmaking, Catherine Morland's Gothic misreadings, and Anne Elliot's second chance. The shorter pieces include the epistolary Lady Susan, the unfinished The Watsons and Sanditon, and early burlesques of sentimental and Gothic conventions. Across the set the subject is courtship inside a narrow class world, rendered as social comedy rather than as romance alone.
