An American who has lived for years in Britain takes a farewell circuit of the island before moving away. He travels by train, bus, and on foot through seaside towns, cathedral cities, the industrial north, the Highlands, and the home counties, staying in hotels and boarding houses and talking to locals. The book mixes observation of landscape, weather, food, and public manners with comic complaint about planning, service, and national self-image. Recurring stops include docks, ruins, and tourist tracks that fail to match their reputation. It is a travel narrative of late-twentieth-century Britain, not a history and not a guidebook with itineraries.
