This four-volume anthology presents accounts of notable trials from classical Athens to the late nineteenth century. The first volume runs from Socrates to the Gunpowder Plot; later volumes take in Galileo, Admiral Byng, the Boston Massacre, Queen Caroline, Burke and Hare, and Oscar Wilde, among other cases. Each piece reconstructs charges, evidence, and the political or moral climate around the courtroom. The set is a reader of legal history for the general audience, not a textbook of procedure or a single biography.
