Published in 1904, this novel is set in the South American republic of Costaguana, in the port of Sulaco, where an English-owned silver mine dominates politics. Charles Gould tries to make the mine a force for order; his wife Emilia dispenses charity; Martin Decoud plots secession; and Gian' Battista Fidanza, the Italian capataz of cargadores nicknamed Nostromo, is trusted to hide a lighter of silver when civil war comes. The narrative moves among harbour, mine, and drawing room. The book is a political novel about material interests, not an adventure of buried treasure alone.
