Synopsis
Toru Watanabe, a Tokyo student in the late 1960s, looks back on his first years at university and on two women. Naoko, the girlfriend of his dead school friend Kizuki, lives much of the time in a sanatorium in the hills; Midori, a lively classmate, pulls him toward ordinary city life. Dormitory politics, folk songs, and the student unrest of the period stay at the edge of a story about grief, sex, and whether Toru can stay with the living. The novel is a coming-of-age narrative, not a history of the protests.
