Back to CataloguePublished in 1818, this novel follows Catherine Morland, a clergyman's daughter raised on Gothic fiction, who is taken to Bath and thrown into the marriage market of assemblies and pump-room walks. She forms a friendship with Isabella Thorpe, whose brother John presses his attentions, and a steadier attachment to Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor. Invited to Northanger Abbey, Catherine reads the house through the conventions of sensational novels and misjudges General Tilney. The book is a comedy of manners that tests a young reader's imagination against ordinary motives of money, family, and courtship in provincial society.
