Synopsis
First published in 1854-55, this novel follows Margaret Hale, who is moved from a Hampshire vicarage to the cotton-manufacturing town of Milton in the north when her father leaves the Church. She meets the mill owner John Thornton, whose pride and the conditions in his factory clash with her southern manners and her sympathy for the workers, including Nicholas Higgins and his daughter Bessy. A strike, family illness, and questions of credit and marriage force both households to change. The book is an industrial novel of class and courtship, not a regional guidebook.
