First published in 1949, this novel is set in Oceania, a superstate ruled by the Party and the face of Big Brother. Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth in London, rewriting past newspaper stories so that the official record always matches the present line. He begins a secret diary and a love affair with Julia, another Party worker, and seeks contact with an Inner Party man, O'Brien, whom he believes may belong to a resistance. The book follows how private memory, sex, and language are policed in a society whose slogans invert truth, and what happens when a man tries to keep an inner life apart from the Party.
