Published in 1818, this short satirical novel is set at Nightmare Abbey, the gloomy Lincolnshire house of the melancholy Mr Glowry. His son Scythrop, a would-be reformer of mankind, hesitates between two women, Marionetta and the mysterious Stella, while house guests talk philosophy, politics, and the pleasures of despair. Figures such as Mr Flosky and Mr Cypress parody the manner of contemporary poets and metaphysicians. Little happens beyond talk, rejected proposals, and a mock-Gothic atmosphere. The book is a comedy of ideas aimed at Romantic gloom, not a tale of real horror.
