First published in French in the 1950s, this memoir follows Eliezer, a Jewish teenager in Sighet, from the community's late belief that the war will pass it by through deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau and forced labour at Buna. He records separations on the ramp, the crematoria, beatings, hunger, and the bond with his father as the pair are driven on the winter evacuation toward Buchenwald. Faith, silence, and the collapse of family duty are tested in the camps rather than in a postwar courtroom. The book is a first-person testimony of one deportation, not a general history of the Holocaust.
