First published in 1975, this short monograph studies Nicholas Hilliard, the Elizabethan goldsmith-painter who made limned portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and of courtiers, lovers, and diplomats. Strong follows Hilliard's training, his treatise on the art of limning, and the technique of painting on vellum in tiny compass. He reads individual miniatures as evidence of fashion, loyalty, and private emblems rather than as mere decoration. Workshop practice and later Jacobean work are included. The book is an art-historical essay with plates, not a picture album without text.
