First published in 1967, this history follows Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra from their marriage through the last decades of imperial Russia to the revolution of 1917 and the family's detention. Massie gives close attention to the haemophilia of their son Alexis, to Alexandra's reliance on the starets Grigori Rasputin, and to the court's isolation from the Duma, the army, and the cities. Ministers, grand dukes, and revolutionaries appear as they press on the couple. The book is a dual biography set inside a falling autocracy, not a general economic history of the period.
