Synopsis

This third novel of A Song of Ice and Fire continues the war among claimants to the Iron Throne as armies move through the Riverlands, the North, and the south of Westeros. The narrative follows many viewpoints: Robb Stark's campaign, the Lannister court at King's Landing after the Blackwater, Stannis in the aftermath of defeat, Jon Snow among the wildlings and the Night's Watch, Arya in the war-torn countryside, and Daenerys across the sea in the slaver cities. Alliances, marriages, and oaths are made under pressure. The book is a multi-strand political and military narrative in which no single front or household controls the war.
