Synopsis
Kathy H. looks back on her years at Hailsham, an English boarding school whose pupils paint, write, and form intense friendships while remaining cut off from ordinary family life. She recalls her bond with the impulsive Ruth and with Tommy, a boy whose rages and pictures matter more than he first understands, and her later work as a carer visiting others of their kind. As the three move from school to the Cottages and then to recovery centres, they learn what their sheltered upbringing was for. The novel is a quiet dystopia about memory, love, and a predetermined medical fate.
