First published in 1970, this biography of the emperor Nero follows his adoption into the Julio-Claudian house, his accession as a teenager, and the years of rule that ended in revolt and suicide. Grant treats the murder of Agrippina, the fire of 64, the persecution of Christians, the tour of Greece, and the artistic performances that shocked senatorial opinion, while testing the hostility of Tacitus, Suetonius, and Cassius Dio. Administration, coinage, and court factions receive as much space as scandal. The book is a critical life of one reign, not a general history of imperial Rome.
