Myths and Legends of the Ancient Near East

This anthology retells myths, legends, and later folk tales from Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, and neighbouring lands. Typical matter includes the Epic of Gilgamesh, Sargon of Akkad, Isis and Osiris, the Tower of Babel, and other journeys to underworlds and towers that claim to reach heaven. Later sections take in Iranian and Arabian story, including entertainments of the kind later gathered as the Arabian Nights. History and legend often share the same figures. The book is a regional survey of traditional narrative, not a single sacred text.
