Myths and Legends of India

By An Anthology · 2001

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This anthology retells myths, epic episodes, and folk tales from the Indian subcontinent, drawing on Hindu scripture and story and also on Buddhist, Jain, Muslim, Christian, and tribal sources. It opens with creation and the gods, then follows Indra, Yama, Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma, and gives substantial space to the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, including Savitri's bargain with death. Later pieces turn to regional legends and fables. The book is a consecutive reader of traditional narrative, not a single epic or a scholarly corpus of original-language texts.
